The Ahmadu Bello University Veterinary Teaching Hospital (ABUVTH) Zaria was established in 1986 as a unit under the Faculty of Veterinary Medicine. In 1988 the first Director was appointed, and by 1989 the Hospital was formally established as an autonomous unit following Nigerian University Commissions' directive and the enactment of statue-30 of Ahmadu bello University. The statutory functions of ABUVTH, Zaria are as follows:
To operate the Hospital and related clinics and provide necessary veterinary health services.
To operate a system of continuing education in clinical veterinary medicine and clinical extension services.
To enhance the development of diagnostic and preventive medical services in cooperation with the Faculty of Veterinary Medicine.
To provide facilities for veterinary clinical training and research in collaborate with the Faculty of Veterinary Medicine.
To participate in the teaching functions of the university where appropriate.
To provide veterinary consultancy services to public and private organizations.
To perform any other functions as may be determined by the council or the senate.
