History | Veterinary Teaching Hospital

The Veterinary Teaching Hospital (VTH) in Ahmadu Bello University Zaria, was established in 1984-85 with the mandate of providing the appropriate environment and facilities for teaching; research and community services toward the improvement of animal healthcare and welfare. statutorily, the Hospital is legally supported by the laws of Ahmadu Bello University (statute 30) which specified its mandate and also earmarked its policy making structures. The Hospital serves as a primary and tertiary animal healthcare, as well as referral centre. It provides teaching facilities for undergraduate and postgraduate Veterinary students and is also a training Hospital for the professional programmes of the College of Veterinary Surgeons of Nigeria (CVSN).

The Hospital also serves as a centre of excellence for clinical research on animal diseases and comparative medical and basic scientific issues relevant animals and human health.


The mission of the Veterinary Teaching Hospital is to provide an exceptional learning environment for entry level veterinarians, CVSN specialty programmes and resident intents. It contribute to the discovery of new knowledge through basic and applied research and clinical trials; provide excellent and compassionate care to all animals; promote engagement through the free exchange of information and the sharing of knowledge within the hospital and with our constituents including individual animal owners, producers, referring veterinarians and other institutions and collaborators; the general public and the biomedical community for the enhancement of animal and human health.


The Veterinary Teaching Hospital and its facilities will be recognized nationally and internationally as centre of excellence for training of Veterinarians, for conducting clinical research and clinical trials. It will also be recognized as a progressive model for interaction with public; referral clinics and the biomedical/biotechnology community. The VTH in Ahmadu Bello University will be recognized for its:

  • Excellent educational programme for entry level veterinarians and advanced clinical specialists.
  • Superior clinical research and clinical trials in collaboration with other units within and outside Nigeria and the biomedical community.
  • Strong commitments in community and outreach services to the animal-owing public and biomedical industries throughout Kaduna State, the Nation and globally.
